Monostroma obscurum is a green alga composed of a single layer of cells, called a monostromatic structure, giving the alga its name. This single layer of cells makes it very frail and it can easily disintegrate.

Laminaria digitata is a brown alga made up of long, finger-like strips, hence its name “digitata”. It generally measures from 1 to 1.5 meters, but can reach up to 4 meters. It grows in the North Atlantic and on certain African coasts.
